Guardian report on Louisiana justice courts
The article examines Louisiana’s justice of the peace court system, highlighting that some judges, including one in Jefferson Parish, earn over $400,000 annually primarily through court fees from eviction cases. Experts argue this fee-based funding creates conflicts of interest, incentivizing judges to maximize eviction proceedings, which disproportionately impact tenants. The system's structure, lacking proper oversight and relying on informal venues, is criticized for fostering misconduct and perpetuating the state’s affordable housing crisis.
