Iranian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy
Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old Iranian woman, has been sentenced to death for blasphemy over a social media post and received over 12 years in prison on charges including acting against national security and spreading propaganda. She was detained during January protests and is currently held in Vakilabad prison. Human rights groups warn that Iran is increasingly using capital punishment to suppress dissent, with more than 600 executions carried out this year. Amini’s case raises concerns about the normalization of the death penalty for peaceful expression and the Iranian authorities’ efforts to test international tolerance. Her case remains under appeal.
