Rising demand for shingles vaccine to prevent dementia
Rising demand for the shingles vaccine in Britain is partly driven by fears it may offer protection against dementia, with studies suggesting a potential reduction in risk. While the vaccine is primarily meant to prevent shingles caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus, recent research indicates it might also reduce dementia incidence, especially in women, by up to 20%. Ongoing studies and preliminary findings support these claims, but definitive proof is still awaited, and health authorities do not currently recommend the vaccine solely for dementia prevention. Many individuals are choosing to get vaccinated based on the possibility of these extended benefits.
