Mental health review: youth face greater challenges
A comprehensive review, led by Professor Peter Fonagy, confirms that mental health issues such as anxiety and depression among young people are genuinely rising due to social, cultural, and economic pressures, including social media, financial insecurity, and reduced support services. The report highlights that these conditions are causing significant distress and overburdening NHS mental health services, with current diagnosis and support systems being inadequate and unfairly accessible. It emphasizes the need for early intervention focused on individual needs instead of overreliance on diagnosis, warning that current approaches are unsustainable.
