Potential removal of youth disability benefit
The government is planning significant welfare reforms aimed at reducing benefit support for under-25s and improving employment rates among young people. Proposals include removing the health component of universal credit for claimants under 25 and replacing the personal independence payment with a new system, potentially involving reduced or targeted support for disabled young people. These changes intend to encourage more youth into work through increased employment support and subsidised jobs, though they raise concerns about impacts on vulnerable groups. The reforms require legislation and are part of broader efforts to address youth unemployment and welfare costs.
