Living in the world’s coolest neighborhood
The article reflects on the changing character of Jongno 3-ga, a neighborhood in Seoul once known for its humble, unpretentious atmosphere and inclusive local community. Originally a refuge for marginalized groups, it was a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and those with limited resources. However, after being named the world's coolest neighborhood, the area has experienced gentrification, increased tourism, and displacement of its original residents and small businesses, leading to a loss of its authentic identity. The author expresses regret over the commercialization and the impact of such rankings on local communities.
