X-ray Safety During Pregnancy
It can be summarized that not all X-ray examinations during pregnancy need to be prohibited, as the decision depends on the type of test, the targeted area, and the radiation dose. Arm and leg scans do not pose a significant risk to the fetus, whereas direct imaging of the abdomen or pelvis requires a careful assessment of the risks and benefits, using the lowest possible dose when necessary. Pregnant women are advised to inform their doctor and radiology technician about the pregnancy or possibility of pregnancy to determine the safest methods. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are suitable alternatives in certain cases. It is not recommended to ignore necessary examinations, as delaying diagnosis can pose risks to the health of both mother and baby. The level of risk assessment depends on the type of test and the stage of pregnancy.
