Cairo Film Festival poster draws attention
The 47th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival, scheduled to take place from November 11 to 20, 2026, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a film program and honors. The festival’s promotional poster design sparked widespread controversy due to the use of artificial intelligence techniques in modifying the image of the late actress Shadia. Some followers argued that the altered photo did not accurately reflect her true features, prompting Shadia’s sister, Nahed Shaker, to criticize it, deeming that the image did not realistically represent their aunt’s appearance. The festival director, Hussein Fahmy, defended the design, emphasizing that choosing Shadia aimed to honor her artistic career and restore old films, and that the use of AI remains limited to promotional material and is not employed in full-length film productions. Meanwhile, critic Tarek Shennawy supported the choice of Shadia but criticized the somber tone and dark colors of the design, calling for the artist’s archive to be used in a way that reflects her brilliance and befit her esteemed stature.
