Messi gets honorary doctorate before last Argentina game
The University of Buenos Aires officially honored the Argentine star Lionel Messi by awarding him an honorary doctorate before his final match with the national team against Benin. This recognition was in appreciation of his athletic career and achievements with Argentina, including winning the 2022 World Cup, the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and his personal success as the country's all-time top scorer. This accolade acknowledges his wide-reaching influence beyond the football field and adds a significant milestone to Messi's impressive record. It is important to note that the title is honorary and not an official academic degree. His family also attended the match to support him, following his international retirement announced in September 2026, after leading the national team in several major finals, cementing his status as one of the greatest football players of all time.
