The new animated “The Cat in the Hat,” voiced by Bill Hader, follows the Cat as he tries to cheer up siblings Gabby and Sebastian while keeping a dangerous cleanup device from tearing reality apart. The review praises the colorful world-building and voice performances but says the film is weighed down by formulaic plotting and sentimental lessons. It concludes that the adaptation misses the book’s playful, Seussian whimsy.
