UC Berkeley student Paula Valentina Albornoz Hernandez, 23, was arrested by ICE at San Francisco International Airport while waiting to fly to Portland and is being held at California City Detention Center. Her attorney says she has a pending asylum application and valid work permit; the Department of Homeland Security says she overstayed her visa and will remain in custody during removal proceedings. Centro Legal de la Raza has filed a habeas petition challenging her detention and seeking her release, and she is scheduled for an immigration court hearing on Nov. 17.
