Elizabeth Pryor on Growing Up as Richard Pryor’s Daughter
Smith College professor Elizabeth Pryor, daughter of comedian Richard Pryor, has published a memoir exploring her father's complex legacy and her personal connection to the controversial use of the n-word in his comedy. She shares her experiences growing up as Pryor’s daughter and her efforts to understand his impact on Black culture, including her teaching a course on the word's history. Pryor’s father eventually disavowed the term after a trip to Kenya, viewing it as culturally specific to U.S. racism.
