New Yorkers debate carriage ban, drivers concerned
The New York City Council plans to ban horse-drawn carriages in Central Park, effective from June 2028, citing animal safety concerns following incidents such as horse deaths and a tourist's fatal fall from a carriage. Carriage drivers and industry supporters argue that horses are well cared for and that the ban threatens their livelihoods, while animal rights groups advocate for the prohibition due to safety and welfare issues. The legislation includes a transition plan for affected workers, but critics say it lacks sufficient support and funding.
