Newsom urged to commute 563 death sentences
California Governor Gavin Newsom is considering whether to commute the death sentences of over 560 inmates on the state's death row, despite political advice and potential risks. He opposes the death penalty on moral grounds, citing concerns over its flawed and racially biased implementation, and views such a move as an act of moral leadership. The decision highlights ongoing debates about justice, public opinion, and the role of state power in executing capital punishment.
