NPR CEO who labeled First Amendment a challenge named for award
NPR CEO Katherine Maher will receive the James C. Goodale First Amendment Award, despite past criticisms of the amendment and comments describing it as a "challenge" in combating disinformation. The award recognizes her leadership amid political and financial scrutiny, including efforts to fight efforts to defund NPR, though federal funding was ultimately rescinded. Maher previously acknowledged that NPR made mistakes, such as declining to cover the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020, which drew controversy. Critics argue her stance on censorship and her past remarks about the First Amendment raise questions about the appropriateness of the award.
