Cranton Italian-Americans face gender divide
A dispute has emerged at the Santa Maria di Prata Society in Cranston, Rhode Island, centered on gender equality and membership rights. The society's male members have blocked women from entering the lounge, citing bylaws that specify only Roman Catholic men can be full members, while women hold auxiliary status. The women, advocating for equal treatment and recognition of their contributions, are threatening legal action, alleging long-standing mistreatment and discrimination. The conflict highlights tensions over tradition versus progress within this culturally significant Italian American organization.
