The Social Reckoning's Strong Acting but Limited Impact
"The Social Reckoning" is a film that explores Facebook’s impact through the perspective of whistleblower Frances Haugen. The story follows Haugen’s efforts to reveal how the platform’s algorithms promote extremism and division, highlighting her discovery that 64 percent of people joining extremist groups are influenced by Facebook’s software. The film presents Haugen’s collaboration with journalist Jeff Horwitz and depicts Zuckerberg’s efforts to improve his public image, with the narrative spanning from 2019 to 2021. Critics note that the movie is dialogue-heavy and somewhat outdated, emphasizing the role of algorithms in spreading harmful content while downplaying individual accountability.
