Becerra’s immigrant story sparks debate
Xavier Becerra, a leading candidate for California governor, has consistently described himself as the "son of immigrants," citing his parents' humble beginnings in Mexico and the U.S. His father, born in Sacramento and raised in Tijuana, traveled between the two countries during the Great Depression, working in various jobs. Becerra’s critics, including Republican Steve Hilton, have challenged this narrative, accusing him of embellishing his family history, as his father was a U.S. citizen from birth. Becerra defended his story, emphasizing his pride in his family's immigrant experience and criticizing Hilton for misunderstanding the complexities of Mexican immigration history.
