Newsom opposes bill on tribal water rights
Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation that would have increased Native tribes' influence over California water policies, citing concerns about delaying efforts to secure water supplies amidst climate change. The bill aimed to require state agencies to recognize historical inequities and consult with tribes on water projects, but opponents argued it was vague and could cause legal delays. Despite recent apologies from Newsom for past injustices against Native Americans, the veto suggests tribes will continue to be excluded from water decision-making processes.
