Botswana criticized for elephant killings
Botswana authorized the slaughter of 23 elephants for independence celebrations, prompting criticism from animal rights groups. The decision, part of national festivities marking the country's 60th anniversary, involved issuing licenses for hunting and distributing the meat across eight districts. Conservation advocates warned that this could undermine elephant protection efforts and encourage poaching, amid concerns about the cultural and ecological significance of elephants and the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
