Judge Limits UC Transgender Pronoun Policy
A federal judge has temporarily limited UC's enforcement of its anti-misgendering policy, protecting members of the conservative group Defending Education from being penalized for referring to individuals using biological names and pronouns aligned with their sex assigned at birth. The injunction, issued by U.S. District Judge Fred W. Slaughter, finds that the policy likely violates First Amendment rights by compelling speech, though UC can still regulate conduct considered abusive harassment. The ruling allows these conservative group members to use language consistent with their beliefs without facing UC sanctions, amid ongoing legal battles over transgender rights in California education institutions.
