Australia Files Class Action Against Meta Over Child Harm
Australian officials have filed a class-action lawsuit against Meta, accusing the company of exposing children to harmful content and encouraging excessive use of Facebook and Instagram through algorithms designed to capture attention and increase engagement. The lawsuit, brought by the law firm Minter Ellison, concerns damages allegedly suffered by eight claimants under the age of 18, who are seeking compensation. The complaint points out that the design of the algorithms and platform mechanisms promotes addiction, amid broader debates over technology companies' responsibility for protecting children online in Australia, which has initiated measures to ban social media use for individuals under 16.
