Finland approves first permanent nuclear waste repository

The Finnish government has granted a license to operate the world's first permanent storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, after 22 years of construction. The facility is known as "Onkalo" and is located within 1.9-billion-year-old rocks in the Ylä-Yöjoki region in southwestern Finland. It is designed to safely store radioactive nuclear fuel for tens of thousands of years. The storage capacity is 6,500 tons of uranium, and it will be used to permanently store fuel from Finland’s five reactors, with final operational testing procedures underway before official use begins. The facility gradually reduces radiation levels over time, reaching levels similar to raw uranium after approximately 100,000 years. This represents a significant step for countries seeking safe long-term solutions for nuclear waste disposal.
