Lebanese Farmers Face Apple Surplus

Apple farmers in Lebanon are suffering from a surplus of production in 2026, with approximately 800 unsold boxes, each weighing around 15 kilograms. This situation threatens to spoil the fruit and lead to crop losses. The farmers rely on solutions such as turning apples into molasses or other industrial products to dispose of their harvest, due to high storage and transportation costs and the difficulty of exporting them amid weak demand and selling prices that do not cover costs. The Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture estimates the surplus at more than 250,000 tons and is working to expand export markets and improve infrastructure to support farmers, along with calling for the establishment of food processing factories and the promotion of direct marketing channels for them.
