Iran boosts civilian training amid rising tensions

Iran is expanding its military and civilian drills amid escalating regional tensions. It has launched a training campaign involving more than 30 million citizens with the aim of forming a thousand popular militias to defend the country. The exercises focus on combat and field skills and include women, to enhance the population’s readiness to face various scenarios such as land invasions or naval operations in the Gulf. This move raises concerns about the militarization of society and the potential use of such forces to suppress internal unrest, especially in light of the recent military escalation by the US and Israel against Iran, which has resulted in the killing of senior commanders.
