France's pandas absent for first time since 2012
France is currently free of giant pandas after the departure of the last pair and their cub in 2021. They are expected to return to China on December 17, where they will be replaced by a new pair of pandas in early 2027, who will reside in France for 10 years. This step is part of China's "soft power" strategy through "panda diplomacy," where Beijing loans rare animals to strengthen its international relations. After their departure, the twins Yuandudu and Huanlili will be transferred to the Chengdu Ecological Conservation Center, having bred three generations of pandas in France since 2012.
