Tunisian Labour Union Calls for Protests

Tunisian organizations and unions, led by the General Labour Union, issued a call to participate in a national march on Saturday to protest the worsening economic and social conditions, rising prices, declining purchasing power, and restrictions on freedoms. This comes amidst a backdrop of decreased activity within civil society and opposition since President Kais Saied extended his powers broadly in 2021. The demands focused on restoring freedoms, improving economic conditions, and halting the repression of unions and journalists. Meanwhile, the opposition argued that disagreements among the parties should not prevent the unification of the civil front to oppose authoritarian rule and restore democracy.
