Why is this inland city called the Ninth Island in Hawaii

The article discusses the relationship between a community of Hawaii and Pacific Island residents in Las Vegas, now known as the "Ninth Island." The text explains how this connection began in 1975 with the opening of the "California" hotel and casino, which targeted Hawaiian visitors by offering traditional foods and tropical decor. This made the California Hotel a preferred destination for the next generation of Hawaiian residents in the city. The community's numbers have grown to approximately 50,000 people. A key reason for many of them relocating to Las Vegas is the high cost of living in Hawaii, as the city offers better job opportunities and no income tax. The community maintains its identity through organizing cultural events, dance and language schools, and investment in traditional cuisine. Residents continue to participate in festivals and food fairs, strengthening their social bonds and connection to their heritage despite the distance from their homeland.
