Gaza residents gather remaining olive harvest
The agricultural sector in Gaza suffers from widespread destruction of fields and olive trees due to war and devastation, with the number of olive trees decreasing from two million before the war to only about 150,000. This has led to a decline in production from 40,000 tons of olives to around 5,000 tons, and the extraction of approximately 700 tons of oil compared to 5,000 tons previously. Most orchards have been damaged, and half of them have been left behind the Israeli line, with most of the remaining trees destroyed, negatively impacting the population's ability to obtain oil at very high prices. A barrel now costs around $500, far beyond their purchasing capacity. The destruction of olive groves, a primary source of livelihood and food, continues, with most oil mills ceasing operations due to a lack of raw materials. This highlights the severe negative impact of the war on Gaza’s agricultural sector.
