Netanyahu Confirms Egyptian Intelligence Visit Before October 7

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has, for the first time, acknowledged that Egyptian Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel visited Israel about a week and a half before the October 7, 2023 attack. However, he denied having met with him, questioning the identity of the person he met during the 59-minute visit. Netanyahu explained that Kamel was in Israel for a memorial ceremony for Israeli soldiers and noted that he has never previously spoken with the head of intelligence from any other country. These comments come in the context of earlier reports indicating that Kamel visited Israel on September 26, 2023, and warned of an imminent attack by Hamas, which Israel officially denied. An internal security investigation revealed that Kamel had sent warnings about a potential escalation in Gaza that were not taken seriously.
