Lula Targets Abstainers Ahead of Brazil Runoff

The article will focus on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's efforts to attract abstaining voters ahead of the runoff elections scheduled for October 25, 2026. Lula has called on his supporters to reach out to those who did not participate in the first round, which saw the highest abstention rate since 1998, with about 33.4 million voters opting not to cast their ballots. Polls indicate that the margin between Lula and his main rival, Flávio Bolsonaro, is narrow, with Bolsonaro polling at 49% compared to 45% for Lula, with a margin of error of two percentage points. As part of his election campaign, Lula outlined his priorities, including vocational training in artificial intelligence, energy, and reforming the security system to combat crime, while Bolsonaro is seeking to solidify his political support in São Paulo. The first round of the election concluded with an extremely close margin—the tightest since the resumption of direct elections in 1989—posing a significant challenge for a victory in the final round.
