Tensions Rise Over Assab Port

The relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea are seeing a diplomatic and military escalation amid renewed clashes in the Tigray region. Addis Ababa accuses Asmara of supporting rebel groups, while Eritrea denies this and considers Ethiopia's attempt to penetrate the port of Assab as an effort to seize a vital Red Sea outlet. Eritrea has called on the UN Security Council to condemn Ethiopia's "declaration of war," warning that it could destabilize the region. Ethiopia, on the other hand, denies these claims and affirms that its goal is to reach the port of Assab peacefully through dialogue. The Assab port is one of the most important commercial and strategic locations, gaining particular significance after Ethiopia lost control of it in 1993. The recent conflict has heightened tensions between the two countries, with warnings that military escalation threatens the security of the Red Sea and regional trade if diplomatic efforts are not undertaken to halt the escalation.
