Turkish FM Clarifies stance on Makkah Pact
The "Mecca Pact" defense agreement signed between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan aims to strengthen mutual deterrence against any attack, especially amid the recent escalation in Yemen and the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. The agreement states that any armed attack against one of the three countries will be considered an attack on all, and encourages the development of their defense cooperation, including providing and deploying forces quickly. Turkish Foreign Minister confirmed that the agreement is defensive in nature and not an offensive move, and that Turkey will not send troops to launch attacks on the territories of other countries. He also stated that the necessary procedures for its referral to the parliament have been completed. This comes after an emergency meeting of the Strategy Committee in Riyadh to enhance deterrent measures in response to regional security tensions, while the Houthis viewed the alliance as an attempt by Saudi Arabia to involve Turkey and Pakistan.
