WHO guidelines on childhood obesity medications

The World Health Organization recommends relying on a healthy diet, regular exercise, and behavioral support instead of medications to treat childhood obesity, with the possibility of resorting to medication or surgery only after non-pharmacological interventions have failed. These guidelines are described as the first of their kind in addressing the rising rates of obesity among children, with approximately 400 million affected aged 5 to 19 in 2024, representing a significant increase since 1990. The WHO warns against the use of medications without supervision and emphasizes the importance of preventive measures and raising awareness about healthy practices.
