US trade deficit hits $105.6B
The U.S. trade deficit continued to widen in August, reaching $105.6 billion—the highest level since March 2025. Imports increased by 4.3%, driven by sustained demand for energy, gold, and semiconductors. Meanwhile, exports rose by 1.4%, mainly from energy products and non-monetary gold. The deficit with the European Union decreased, but it widened with China, reaching $16.4 billion. Despite the expanding deficit, it remains roughly 20% lower than at the start of the year, thanks to rapid export growth. The United States still faces its largest deficits with Mexico, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
