Alternative party leads German state

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved a historic victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament for the first time since 1945, as its candidate Tobias Rausch received 48 out of 83 votes. This marks an unprecedented development in German politics since World War II. These results follow the party's major win in the state elections, where it secured 39 seats out of 83, surpassing the conservatives and constituting a significant political blow to Chancellor Mert's party. The AfD is also seeking to attract conservative voters and join the parliament through various strategies, with its popularity climbing in polls that show it surpassing the 30% mark in voting intentions. These developments have sparked widespread controversy, protests, and rejection from opposition parties, reflecting profound changes in the German political landscape after the war.
