Hunger-Fighting Tree Grows in One Nation

Enset plant (also known as "false banana") is a vital crop in Ethiopia, providing food for over 20 million people. It is characterized by its adaptability to various environmental conditions and produces traditional bread called "kocho" from its stalks and underground parts, as well as starchy liquids that can be converted into powder for porridge. Despite its significant advantages, enset remains relatively unknown worldwide due to scattered political and cultural restrictions. Its cultivation within Ethiopia is declining, despite its potential to expand arable areas. It is an important source of food security and could help address climate change challenges, although there are obstacles in transferring cultivation knowledge and processing methods into widespread use. Support is needed to promote its utilization and develop agricultural techniques that facilitate harvesting and processing.
