US soldier detained for killing and theft in Japan

The killing of a 39-year-old Japanese woman by a U.S. Marine on Okinawa has sparked a surge of anger and intense reactions against the U.S. military presence on the island. The 20-year-old suspect, stationed at Kadena Air Base, was arrested after her body was found in a hotel, strangled, and her wallet and handbag were stolen before he fled. Okinawa Governor Genta Koga expressed deep displeasure and called for improved discipline and education for American forces following this repeated incident. Tensions continue to rise between the local population and the U.S. military presence, which includes approximately 50,000 troops in Japan, a large portion of whom are based on Okinawa.
