Russian lab plague case leaves one dead
The health authorities in Russia announced the death of a laboratory employee in Irkutsk due to the plague, after she accidentally broke a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples. Approximately 200 close contacts have been placed under medical observation, including more than 100 in hospitals. The authorities have canceled public events and launched a criminal investigation into potential safety violations. Officials urged citizens to remain calm and confirmed that the results of the contacts' tests have been negative so far, amid reports of a case matching pneumonic plague, a disease that affects the lungs and is considered highly contagious through respiratory droplets.
