Brazil votes in tense presidential race

Today, Sunday, voters in Brazil are electing a new president amidst intense competition between the leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (80 years old) and the far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro (45 years old), son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. It is expected that the results from the first round will be inconclusive, likely leading to a runoff on October 25. The campaign has focused on issues such as crime, the role of the state, and relations with the United States, with Lula advocating for the continuation of social programs, while Bolsonaro promises a tougher approach to fighting crime. Former President Bolsonaro, who lost the recent election and is currently under house arrest, has announced he will pardon his son Flávio if he wins.
