Hainan Advances Zero Waste Initiatives

The Chinese province of Hainan has focused on implementing the "Zero Waste Island" project to reduce resource consumption and achieve carbon neutrality by converting waste into energy and enforcing strict environmental policies. Approximately 4,200 tons of household waste are processed daily at facilities that convert it into electricity, enough to meet the needs of over 200,000 homes. All untreated landfills have been closed since 2021. Additionally, a ban has been imposed on non-biodegradable plastic products, with the use of biodegradable bags increasing to 81% by April 2026. Hainan aims to develop a low-carbon economy, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 99.9%. The plan includes completing the construction of a low-carbon island before 2045 and cutting annual emissions by 70% from peak levels within the next five years.
