Steinmeier marks German unity anniversary

In an impactful speech in Bremen, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reflected on the 36th anniversary of German reunification, warning of the threats posed by extremist demagogues that weaken national unity. He explained that many citizens have lost faith in the political system after decades of development and renewal. He also emphasized that the success of reunification in 1990 was built upon what was achieved in 1989, and underscored the urgent need to confront the rising extremism that threatens democracy and freedom. He called for the renewal of democracy, efforts to restore trust, and the reinforcement of democratic principles, warning that continued erosion of confidence could undermine national unity. He reaffirmed that Germany is a good country and must remain so through collective efforts.
