Refugee children's education at risk

The United Nations has taken steps to address the crisis of educating refugee children, a situation that has worsened due to a decline in humanitarian funding. In 2025, approximately 5.8 million refugee children did not attend school. Data showed that 44% of the 13.1 million school-age refugee children were out of school, with program funding decreasing from $5.2 billion in 2024 to $3.9 billion in 2025, despite the need totaling $8.5 billion. The High Commissioner for Refugees warned that reduced funding threatens to increase the numbers of out-of-school children and restrict educational opportunities. He emphasized that education serves as a means of protection and opportunity for youth, noting that the primary school enrollment rate stands at 65%, but only 32% for secondary education and 11% for higher education. Additionally, millions of refugees face the risk of losing vital aid due to lack of funding, which threatens the deterioration of protection services for them.
