Yemen's health sector faces Houthi escalation

The healthcare system in Yemen has faced a significant escalation due to ongoing Houthi attacks, with tens of thousands displaced across eight governorates. The capacity of medical facilities to handle injuries and urgent needs has deteriorated. The escalation has increased the risk of widespread epidemic diseases such as cholera, measles, dengue fever, and diphtheria, in addition to worsening malnutrition. There have been over 18,000 suspected measles cases with 106 deaths, and 390 diphtheria cases resulting in 13 fatalities. The health service system has also been affected, with 60% of healthcare units operating at full capacity, while 4% have completely ceased functioning. This puts immense pressure on the few remaining centers able to provide treatment. The World Health Organization is mobilizing efforts, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, to ensure continued services by strengthening hospital capacities, establishing alternative supply corridors, and preparing logistical centers to address the worsening health situation and ongoing displacement. At the same time, there is an increasing need to protect access to healthcare services amidst the escalating humanitarian and emergency conditions.
