German prisoners go digital

German authorities will allow inmates in three prisons in North Rhine-Westphalia to use the internet for the first time, but in a limited and supervised manner, with the aim of enhancing communication, education, and safety. Special rooms equipped with secure devices will be set up so that prisoners can maintain contact with the outside world and benefit from educational and rehabilitative programs, with restrictions on websites and permits. This pilot project aims to improve reintegration opportunities, reduce the need for transfers, and decrease drug smuggling, with the expectation that it will contribute to increasing safety levels within the prisons.
