China introduces new elderly care standards

China has unveiled two mandatory national standards to enhance the safety and quality of elderly care services. These include "Basic Requirements for the Regulation of Elderly Care Services" and "Standards for Identifying Major Accident Risks." These standards will come into effect in August 2027 and aim to elevate professionalism and regulation within the sector, which is experiencing a significant rise in the elderly population, with over 320 million Chinese aged 60 and above—making China the country with the largest elderly population in the world. As part of its long-term plan (2026-2030), China seeks to develop 2,000 elderly care facilities and increase the occupancy rate of these institutions to more than 73%.
