A Dutch study has shown that the drug "Guanabenz," originally used to treat high blood pressure, may help slow the progression of a rare hereditary white matter disease that affects children between the ages of one and six. This condition leads to the loss of motor and cognitive abilities and can result in early death. The results indicated that children treated with "Guanabenz" became less dependent on wheelchairs and did so at a slower rate, and none of them died during the study, compared to 5 out of 66 children in the untreated group who passed away. Side effects observed included hallucinations, drowsiness, and lowered blood pressure, but these symptoms diminished with continued treatment. The study confirmed that the medication temporarily impacts the disease’s progression, but longer follow-up is needed to understand its full effects. It is worth noting that this disease is extremely rare, affecting about one in 100,000 children worldwide.
