Seoul has decided to use AI-enhanced cameras to monitor the Hangang River bridges in an effort to reduce suicides, which pose a serious problem in the country, especially among young people. Since 2021, around 900 cameras have been installed on Seoul’s bridges, helping to save over 99% of individuals contemplating suicide through swift interventions within less than 5 minutes. However, suicide prevention still requires addressing deeper psychological issues, as the suicide rate in 2024 rose to approximately 29 per 100,000 people, the highest in over a decade. The system aims to alert authorities when a person remains in a dangerous area or uses assistance phones, emphasizing that intervention presents an opportunity for reconsideration before tragedy occurs.
