Morocco reports over 300 forest fires in 2023

The Moroccan National Agency for Water and Forests revealed that from the beginning of the year up to July 20, Morocco recorded 310 wildfires, destroying 1,850 hectares. This represents a 32% increase in the number of fires, while the burned areas decreased by 30%. The agency explained that the rise was due to several factors, including the dense growth of grass cover resulting from exceptional rainfall, as well as rising temperatures that accelerated plant dryness and increased their flammability. Rapid intervention efforts and coordination among relevant authorities successfully contained most of the fires in their early stages. The Souss-Massa region was the most affected, with 600 hectares burned, followed by Beni Mellal-Khénifra with 410 hectares.
