German scientists develop air water extraction

German scientists develop air water extraction

German researchers have developed a unique material that enables the extraction of water from the air, even from relatively dry air, due to high temperatures and drought caused by climate change. The material, named CAU-10-H, relies on a porous structure made of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing tiny cavities that attract water molecules. It can absorb water even at low humidity levels of up to 17%, then release it at around 70°C. This technology allows for the extraction of approximately 1.8 liters of water per day from each kilogram of the material, with the ability to be reused more than 10,000 times. Its cost is about $13.80 per kilogram, which could be reduced to $12.10 in large-scale production. Additionally, the material can be used to improve thermal cooling systems such as adsorption coolers, enhancing cooling efficiency, especially in conditions reaching up to 55°C. This technology represents an important step toward sustainable and environmentally friendly water sources amid the challenges of water scarcity and climate change.
